The 13th edition of Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, the UAE’s premier road race, is primed to welcome over 40 elite and almost 4,000 amateur runners tomorrow (8 February) from around the world at Al Marjan Island. Staged under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince, the Emirate’s first major sporting event of the year will see professional athletes and amateur runners take on a brand-new course, surrounded with scenic, breathtaking views of Ras Al Khaimah.
Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon returns with a record number of participants this year, set to welcome over 100 different nationalities to the start line including international runners flying in from the UK, Germany, Kenya, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the press conference to announce the event, Haitham Mattar, Chief Executive Officer of Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) said: “This year’s edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon is going to be unique, it will be held at a new scenic location on Al Marjan Island. Our beautiful Emirate offers the ideal backdrop to enjoy this incredible event with stunning natural landscapes, pristine beaches and authentic history and culture. This year, the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon is introducing a few additions including the Mini Marathon, aimed at families and younger runners, and a “Fun Village” which will offer a wide range of activities for the whole family to enjoy.”
Captain Cliff Brand, Chief Executive Officer of RAK Ports added: “We are delighted to be the main sponsor of Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon once again this year. Tomorrow is a momentous day in the Emirate’s sporting calendar that will see the convergence of individuals from all over the country and further afield, in an endeavor to make a change for themselves and to inspire others. Partnering the with world’s fastest half marathon is a proud moment for RAK Ports and a great opportunity to increase our engagement with the community and to help develop the sporting fabric of the Emirate.”
Elite runners will tackle the course at 6.45 a.m., before mass runners hit the road at 7 a.m., followed by the team relay race at 7.10 a.m. The “Mini Marathon” – a new category for families and younger runners – is accepting registrations on the event venue in four race categories, this will start just after 12 noon. The kid-friendly event will welcome 7-12 year olds for a 2.3km run and 11-17 year olds for the 5K “Teen Dash.” in addition there will also be an event to challenge ‘Dads & Daughters’ and ‘Moms & Sons’ to a 2.3km run in teams of two.
To complement the excitement of the race, there will also be a host of fun-filled family focused activities at the “Fun Village” including the “kids carnival” area featuring trampolines and ball pits, musical circles, the “fitness zone” with Yoga, Pilates and Zumba classes, a “sports game zone” to engage the young ones in football classes and obstacle courses, along with variety of food trucks offering delightful treats and refreshing drinks.
